An unusual planning application has been submitted for a former Nuneaton pub. It asks for permission to install an illuminated commercial billboard at the side of the old The Crown Inn pub in Bond Street.

It would be where the existing signage for the former pub is currently located. The LED screen commercial billboard would appear intermittently.

The application has been submitted but a decision on the future of the actual building is yet to be made.

As we reported in our newsletter, there are plans to convert the pub into 11 residential apartments with first and second-floor extensions to the rear.

The future of the 19th-century building has been uncertain since the pub suddenly closed its doors without any prior warning back in February 2018.

At one point it was thought that it was going to re-open as a pub, but then this fell through. Then a planning application was submitted to turn the building into flats.

Again, this did not materialise and since then it has been targeted by vandals, who trashed the former pub from the inside, sending shards of glass into the street as unsuspecting residents walked by.

Since then many windows have been shuttered off and it has stood empty.

Both the application for the illuminated sign and also the apartment conversion plan is being looked at by planning officers at Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council.

Recommendations will then be made if planning permission should be granted for them.
