Lady Gaga lay flat on a stone slab, the flow of her blood-red costume mottled and bunched to resemble tissue removed during some sort of ritualistic sacrifice. A troupe of a dozen dancers churned below the slab, balanced atop 10 feet of gray concrete blocks; a sort of monolithic ancient altar.

Soon, the platform to which the singer was strapped began to tilt forward and lower, placing her upright. She removed the restraint and stumbled down the small staircase, caught by a dancer as she performed the final lines of “Alice,” the blazing dance-pop song she’d been singing all along.
