JACKSON, MI – If funding is not secured, downtown Jackson may not see a grocery store opening anytime soon.

‘We need more money.’ Peach Market is out of funds and may not happen, owner says

An effort to bring a grocery store to downtown Jackson is struggling with funding and a partner is needed to help bring it to fruition, the owner of Jackson’s proposed Peach Market said.

Peach Market is a 7,000-square-foot grocery store with fresh produce, a coffee and liquor bar, deli, prepared foods and more that was intended to open in Jackson in 2021, said Andrew Kokas, who owns and is developing the former Evanoff’s Food and Cocktails building with his wife, Yizhuo “Olivia” Liang.

Legendary ‘haunted house’ meets wrecking ball in Jackson

A “haunted house” that likely will live on forever in Jackson legend and lore is no more.

The home at 820 Maltby St., whose spooky happenings brought national attention to town in the early 1960s, met the wrecking ball in early June.

Vacant for several years, the home on the city’s east side had fallen into disrepair and was bought by the city in late 2019 after Jackson County had acquired it earlier that year through tax foreclosure.

Driver was ejected from Jaguar in double fatal crash

Police have released more details about the head-on crash that killed two Jackson County men Tuesday night, including the makes of the vehicles and the ages of the men involved.

At about 8:57 p.m. June 28, deputies from the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Page Avenue near Streator Avenue in Summit Township for the two-vehicle crash.

‘I’m going to follow the law.’ Jackson County prosecutor will enforce state’s 1931 abortion ban

Jackson County Prosecutor Jerry Jarzynka plans to enforce the state’s 1931 law prohibiting abortion like he would any other statute.

“I’m going to follow the law,” Jarzynka said. “It’s a validly passed statute -- I’m not going to ignore it. If a law enforcement agency investigates a violation (of the law), I would review that like any other criminal case and look at the evidence, and make a determination if there’s enough evidence to prove a criminal charge beyond a reasonable doubt.”

1 killed in wrong-way, head-on crash on I-94 in Jackson County

A wrong-way driver led to a fatal pileup on I-94 in Jackson County Monday night in Grass Lake Township, police said.

Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the multi-vehicle crash on westbound I-94 near Clear Lake Road, east of Jackson at the Washtenaw County line, at about 8:58 p.m. on June 27.

They discovered a man driving a Ford passenger car was traveling east in the westbound lanes of the highway when he hit a westbound Chevy SUV head-on, causing a semitruck to also collide with the SUV, police said.

Bob Seger and Billy Joel tribute bands are coming to the Jackson area for an outdoor concert in July.

Country Boots & Bands and Raine Productions are bringing the bands Lookin’ Back and Allentown to Aggies Sports Bar, 108 Brooklyn Road, at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 30.

Lookin’ Back is seven musicians united to keep Bob Seger’s music performed at its highest level for both lifelong and new fans, while Metro Detroit-based Allentown is Michigan’s only Billy Joel tribute band, concert organizers said.
