Banner displayed at Charlotte FC’s match at BofA Stadium shows support for abortion rights
CHARLOTTE — Some Charlotte Football Club fans are causing quite the buzz on social media after a banner was put up at Thursday night’s match at Bank of America Stadium.
The banner said “Reproductive right are human rights,” and the committee that makes the banners, known as tifos, unveiled it at Pride Night.
Kate McGuire is one of the committee members, all of whom are fans. They vote on the banners and help make them. McGuire said the vote was unanimous to create the one at Thursday’s match, following the Supreme Court’s decision last week to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Everyone who was a part of the conversation wanted to show the support, wanted to show that this is our stance, and we’re not going to be quiet about it,” McGuire said.
Channel 9 learned Charlotte FC has to approve the banners or tifos that are brought into the stadium. Major League Soccer gives guidelines to all clubs, allowing signs about human rights, among other things.
“Every time we make a banner or come up with an idea for a banner, it’s, ‘I hope they like this one,’” she said.
For McGuire and others in the supporters groups, the approval of the banner meant something.
“I mean, it’s huge to know that the smallest level of a banner that goes on a railing, that they support that message, and that they approve that message,” McGuire said.
Charlotte FC declined an interview with Channel 9, saying banners and the making of them are fan-led. They also noted any approval of a sign does not necessarily mean the club agrees or disagrees with the message on it.
Still, McGuire would like the team to go even further.
“I definitely hope that we see something from the team, from the organization,” she said.
